Endocrinology

What is endocrinology?

Endocrinology is a sub-specialty within the field of internal medicine. Endocrinologists diagnose and treat diseases associated with internal glandular secretions or hormones. Included in this field are diseases of

diabetes, the thyroid, hypertension, osteoporosis and calcium disorders, adrenal and pituitary glands, and hormonal disorders causing infertility, low blood sugar and weight problems.

Diabetes at IACNY

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not properly produce or use insulin, resulting in high levels of sugar in the blood. Diabetes can result in complications of the eyes, kidneys, heart, blood vessels and nerves. Our goal is to control blood sugar levels safely to reduce the risk of developing these harmful complications.

Our approach to addressing all aspects of diabetes care leads to optimal outcomes. We follow national recommendations suggested by the American Diabetes Association. Our team includes an on-site certified diabetes educator, podiatrist, laboratory and offsite dietician. We are also actively involved in diabetes research where our patients can participate in cutting-edge treatments right in our office.

Osteoporosis at IACNY

Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones become fragile, possibly leading to fractures. Our aim is to prevent the occurrence of fractures as much as possible. Our proactive approach starts by screening patients that are at risk of having osteoporosis. We offer an on-site bone density machine that can help diagnose osteoporosis and osteopenia (low bone density) in a timely manner, sometimes on the same day as the appointment.

Our laboratory is equipped to measure the bloodwork needed to determine the cause of low bone density, and we also have the ability to infuse medications for osteoporosis treatment in our office. Our endocrinologist can provide patients with education on vitamin D and calcium intake, as well as exercise and fall prevention.

Other Endocrine Diseases

From hair loss to weight loss, we address each individual patient to find a cause. Other conditions our endocrinologist can treat include thyroid disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome, adrenal insufficiency, parathyroid hormone excess, vitamin D deficiency and pituitary tumors.
